Ronald Nicholas Rudan was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on March 18th, 1937, the son of Nicholas and Olga (Hucal) Rudan. The family moved to Toronto in 1944.
He obtained his education at Wellesley Street and Perth Avenue Public Schools, Humberside Collegiate Institute and St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto where he attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1959.
He studied law at Osgoode Hall Law School and received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1962. He was called to the bar April 10, 1964.
Ron articled with Mills & Mills LLP and was invited back as a lawyer in 1964, became a partner in 1971, was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1979, and practiced continuously with the firm until retiring in 2016. He particularly enjoyed the commercial, corporate and employment law elements of his practice.
In 1964, he married Diane Lesia Metelsky, of Toronto, and they had three children, Lisa, Michael and Lynne. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather to his family.
Ron was a member of the board of directors of St. George’s College Association, and of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. He was a member of an ethics review committee composed of medical, legal and lay appointees, who review protocols for drug testing and the assessment of the tests on volunteers. He was also a member of the board of directors of several Canadian corporations.
Ron was a lover of music, and an avid sailor, golfer, and skier. He supported the performing arts in Toronto. He spent a great deal of his spare time coaching minor hockey in Etobicoke, and managing Ski Racers at the Caledon Ski Club. Ron also enjoyed membership in St. George’s Golf and Country Club and playing old-timer hockey, where he made many close friendships.
His compassion, sense of humour and mischievousness will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Ron passed away on July 27, 2022, at age 85. He is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Lisa Skelton, Michael Rudan, Lynne Woollcombe; grandchildren, Sylvie, Daniel and Philippa Skelton, Alexander Rudan, Nicholas, Andrew and Geoffrey Woollcombe; and his sister, Angela Straker.
