Alexander was born on January 2, 1856, as the youngest of ten children. He achieved academic success by graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1884, earning the Bronze Medal. After being called to the Bar the same year, he joined his brother George to establish the law firm Mills & Mills.
He was deeply involved in mission work, playing a pivotal role in the founding of The Italian Methodist Church and co-founding The African Methodist Episcopal Church in Toronto. His most notable legal achievement was negotiating settlements on behalf of the Dominion Government when it took over Anticosti Island. He passed away in 1930 while on a round-the-world cruise with his wife in Palermo, Sicily. Before his death, he witnessed the firm’s successful transition to the second generation of Mills.
