John Paul Mills, the youngest of Ralph S. and Thora Mills’ five sons, was born on June 25, 1942, in Toronto. He attended Rosedale Public School, the University of Toronto Schools (UTS), and Princeton University, graduating in 1964. In 1965, he married Jannie Whitcraft, with whom he has three sons: Donald, David, and Michael. David is currently the Managing Partner at Mills & Mills LLP.

Paul attended the University of Toronto Law School, where he graduated fourth in his class with honors in 1967. He was the President of the Students’ Law Society and a founding Trustee of the Class of 1967 Trust Fund, which makes annual awards to two students. After being called to the Bar in March 1969, he joined Mills & Mills, where he had previously articled, became a partner in 1973, and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1982.

His charitable and community work includes serving on the boards of several charities and educational organizations including Fred Victor Mission, the Toronto United Church Council and Winchester House, a residence for teenage girls. An avid sportsman, he enjoys tennis, squash (until Covid), and golf. After over 55 years of service, Paul retired from legal practice in June 2024.
